Biography

Originally known as Le Crépuscule, the four-piece electronica band Poni Hoax formed in 2001 in Paris, France. Keyboardist Laurent Bardainne, guitarist Nicolas Villebrun, bassist Arnaud Roulin, and drummer Vincent Taeger met as college students at the Conservatoire National de Musique, then formed Poni Hoax with French-Cambodian vocalist Nicolas Ker following their graduation. Mixing electro, disco, and British rock influences into a chic, sophisticated sound, the group released the Budapest EP in 2005 and returned in 2006 with a full-length album, Poni Hoax. The singles "She's on the Radio" and "Budapest" both became staples in clubs across Europe, paving the way for another album, Images of Sigrid, in 2008. Images of Sigrid's biggest hit, "Antibodies," helped spread the band's reputation well outside of France, and Poni Hoax maintained a mix of critical acclaim and commercial success with 2013's A State of War and 2017's Tropical Suite. Meanwhile, Nicolas Ker built an audience outside of the band, too, thanks to a well-received solo career that he launched with 2016's Les Faubourgs de l'Exil. He also recorded a pair of collaborative albums, La Rivière Atlantique and Empire, with fellow singer Arielle Dombasle. Unfortunately, Ker died in Paris at the age of 50 on May 17, 2021.
