The Dance for Philosophy, also known as Philosophy No Dance, underscore its brightly colored J-pop bops with fab fashion and dance routines. With a retro twist that draws inspiration from Japansâs chintzy city pop of the 1980s and 1970s disco and funk, the girl group adds a dash of R&B to create a groove-laden sound. Comprising members Mariri Okutsu, Maria Sato, Haru Hinata and Otaha Totsuka, The Dance for Philosophy assembled in 2015 (with original fifth member Ichikawa Nanako leaving later that year) and released its debut album, Funky but Chic, in 2016. With the assistance of producer Keitaro Kamo, in 2017 the group scored a hit with âDance Founderâ, which was featured on its second album The Founder, also released that year. Third album Excelsior followed in 2019, and in 2020 the group released its remix album Sapiosexual. In 2021, the group kept up a steady release schedule with major singles like âCup Ramen Programâ (April 28), âDouble Standardâ (August 18, used as the ending theme for The Honor Student at Magic High School), and âSunflowerâ (December 1). In 2022, they released their fourth album Ai no Tetsugaku (April 27) and their first EP Red Carnival (October 19), then saw a lineup change when Otoha Totsuka graduated on November 19 and Nono Kiyoshi and Nanako Kayama joined. Their 2023 output included major singles âNeppÅ« wa Ruten Suruâ (March 15, opening for Ayakashi Triangle) and âChou Cream Funkâ (May 31, ending for Mashle), plus their second EP One Summer Dream (September 20). In 2024, they followed with their fifth album New Berry (March 13) and major singles âLiar Girlâ (July 31) and âKoi no Shabadubiduâ (November 13). In December 2025, they released the EP Gerende Funky Love.
