Phil Leadbetter, born on March 31, 1962, in Knoxville, Tennessee, was an American resonator guitarist who began playing at age 12. His professional career started with appearances on The Grandpa Jones Show in 1988 and as a member of The Vern Gosdin Band in 1989. Leadbetter gained recognition with J.D. Crowe and the New South from 1990 to 2001, contributing to their Grammy-nominated album Flashback. He formed Wildfire in 2002 and Grasstowne in 2007, releasing albums including Uncontained (2001) and The Road Headin' Home (2007). Leadbetter's solo career included notable releases such as "Slide Effects" (2005), for which he won "Instrumental Album of the Year" by the International Bluegrass Music Association. He was awarded "Dobro Player of the Year" in 2005, 2014, and 2019. Leadbetter died on October 14, 2021, following a COVID-19 infection after battling Hodgkins Lymphoma multiple times.
