Biography
Phil Cordell, born on July 17, 1947, in England, was a British musician known for his versatile roles as a singer and multi-instrumentalist. After leaving school in 1963, he joined the North London band Steve Douglas and the Challengers as a guitarist, which later evolved into The Prophets. Following this, he formed Tuesday's Children and released several singles before going solo in 1967. His first single "Pumping the Water" was released under his own name in 1969, with Phil Cordell playing all instruments himself. Under the stage name Springwater, he achieved his breakthrough hit with "I Will Return" in 1971, which reached number 5 in the UK and topped the charts in Switzerland. He followed this success with additional singles and his debut album Springwater in 1972. In 1973, under the moniker Dan the Banjo Man, Phil Cordell released "Dan the Banjo Man", which became a Number 1 hit in Germany. Throughout the mid-1970s, he continued to release singles and albums under various names, including Born Again in 1977. Phil Cordell's final album was Springwater, re-released in 2002. He died on March 31, 2007, leaving behind a notable discography that included collaborations with other artists and production work on albums such as Tucky Buzzardâs Allright on the Night.
