Biography

Pedro Anibal de Oliveira Gomes, born on February 7, 1952, in Salvador, Bahia, is a Brazilian guitarist, singer, songwriter and composer. He began playing guitar by ear at nine, later joining Los Gatos and forming Os Minos at 17. Pepeu Gomes rose to prominence with seminal Brazilian rock group Novos Baianos, contributing to the 1972 album Acabou Chorare. He launched his solo career in 1978 with Geração do Som and followed with Na Terra a Mais de Mil (1979), which featured the hit "Meu Coração". Subsequent releases included Pepeu Gomes (1981), Um Raio Laser (1982), and Masculino e Feminino (1983) in the United States. In 1985 he released Energia Positiva and performed at Rock in Rio. His 1999 album Meu Coração earned a gold certification, and in 2011 he re‑issued On the Road and released Eu Não Procuro o Som. Later releases included Alto da Silveira (2014) and Eterno Retorno (2018), alongside ongoing appearances tied to the Novos Baianos legacy. In the 2020s he stayed active with archival and live-focused releases, including Meu Coração (2024 Remaster), the 2024 single “Fuzuê, Auê” featuring Chico César, and the concert set Sesc Pompéia (Ao Vivo) (2025), while his reputation as a virtuoso was also reinforced by honors like Guitar World’s 1988 recognition and Rolling Stone Brasil’s guitar icon list.
