Biography
Paul Douglas Hillier, born on February 9, 1949 in Dorchester, England, is an English conductor, music director, and baritone specializing in early and contemporary classical music. In 1967, he began his musical education at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, studying voice. His concert debut took place in 1974 in London's Purcell Room. That same year, he co-founded the Hilliard Ensemble alongside Paul Elliott and David James. He directed this ensemble until 1990, when he founded Theatre of Voices to explore both early music and contemporary repertoire. In 2003, he became Chief Conductor of Ars Nova in Copenhagen, a position he held until 2023. He also was appointed Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of Chamber Choir Ireland in 2008, serving until 2024. Throughout his career, he recorded numerous albums on various labels, including the 1992 recording A Land of Pure Delight with His Majestie's Clerkes.
