Paul Douglas Freeman, born January 2, 1936, in Richmond, Virginia, was an American conductor. He earned degrees from the Eastman School of Music and studied under Ewald Lindemann at the Hochschule für Musik (Music University) in Berlin. His conducting career began as music director of the Opera Theatre of Rochester. Freeman held posts with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra (1968-1970) and Detroit Symphony Orchestra (1970-1979). He served as music director of the Victoria Symphony in Canada from 1979 to 1988, and founded the Chicago Sinfonietta in 1987. Notable recordings include a nine-LP series on Black symphonic composers re-released as a Sony Classical boxed set in 2019 and collaborations with pianist Derek Han recording piano concertos by Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. Freeman was nominated for two Emmy Awards. He died July 21, 2015, in Victoria, British Columbia.
