Pansy Division is an American queercore ensemble from San Francisco established in 1991. The group consists of the musicians Jon Ginoli, Chris Freeman, Joel Reader, and Luis Illades. They achieved professional recognition for a musical style characterized by pop-punk and power pop and for being the first openly gay rock band featuring predominantly gay musicians. The ensemble was founded in 1991 by the vocalist and guitarist Ginoli and the bassist Freeman. Their recording career began with the debut single “Fem in a Black Leather Jacket” (1992). Pansy Division achieved professional recognition for signing with the label Lookout! Records in 1992. Their discography included the debut studio recording Undressed (1993) and the studio recording Deflowered (1994). The ensemble achieved professional recognition for performing as the opening act for the ensemble Green Day on the Dookie tour in 1994. Their recording career included the compilation recording Pile Up (1995) which featured a cover of the song “Smells Like Queer Spirit” (1995). Pansy Division achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Wish I'd Taken Pictures (1996) and the studio recording Absurd Pop Song Romance (1998). They achieved professional recognition for signing with the label Alternative Tentacles in 2001 and releasing the studio recording Total Entertainment! (2003). Their recording career included the documentary movie Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band (2008) and the studio recording That's So Gay (2009). The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the studio recording Quite Contrary (2016) and performing a 30th-anniversary tour in 2023.
