Biography

Osian Gwynn Ellis (born 8 February 1928) was a Welsh classical harpist, composer, and teacher from Ffynnongroew. Ellis studied at the Royal Academy of Music and served as professor of harp between 1959 and 1989. The harpist co-founded the Melos Ensemble in 1959 and joined the London Symphony Orchestra as principal harpist in 1961. Starting in 1959, Ellis maintained a professional partnership with Benjamin Britten, who composed several works for the artist. The harpist released the album Diversions in 1994. In 2008, Ellis released the albums 17th & 18th-Century Harp Music and 19th & 20th-Century Harp Music. The musician was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1971 and served as the honorary president of the Wales International Harp Festival. Ellis died on 5 January 2021.
