The Orchestra at Temple Square, a 110-member ensemble based in Salt Lake City, Utah, was founded in 1999 under Gordon B. Hinckley, then president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The orchestra aimed to enhance performances by the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square and involve instrumental musicians on a volunteer basis. Initially directed by Barlow Bradford, the Orchestra developed into a critically acclaimed symphony orchestra. After Bradford's resignation in 2002, Craig Jessop provided musical supervision, while Igor Gruppman became conductor in 2003. Under Gruppman, the orchestra performed masterworks and accompanied the Tabernacle Choir in broadcasts and recordings, including Music & the Spoken Word and the Choirâs Christmas specials on PBS. Notable recordings featuring the orchestra include Handel's Messiah (2016).
