Biography

Opium Moon was an American new-age musical ensemble based in Los Angeles, California. The group consisted of santurist Hamid Saeidi, violinist Lili Haydn, percussionist MB Gordy, and bassist Itai Disraeli. Formed following the 2016 U.S. presidential election, the ensemble released its eponymous debut album, Opium Moon, through Be Why Music in 2018. This work received the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Their second album, Night + Day (2021), consisted of two song cycles and received a nomination for the same award at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. The group’s improvisational style was inspired by the Persian poet Hafez and blended jazz, rock, Middle Eastern, and African sounds. Three members were immigrants from Iran, Israel, and Canada, and their music was influenced by the global refugee crisis.
