Biography

Octavian Nemescu, born on March 29, 1940 in Pașcani, Romania, was a composer known for his diverse repertoire spanning orchestral, chamber, choral, electroacoustic, multimedia, metamusic, imaginary and ritual works. He studied composition at the Ciprian Porumbescu Conservatory from 1956 to 1963. Nemescu's early breakthrough included participating in the Darmstadt summer courses in 1972. From 1970 to 1978, he taught music analysis and counterpoint at the Transilvania University of Brașov. His notable works include Four Dimensions in Time - IV (1967), Metabizantinirikon (1985), and Alpha - Omega (1988). Nemescu's compositions earned him several awards, including the Aaron Copland Prize and two awards at the Concours International de Musique Électroacoustique de Bourges in 1980 and 1982. He passed away on November 6, 2020, in Bucharest.
