Biography
Nyah Fearties was a Scottish folk-punk band from the village of Lugton, formed in 1982. Led by brothers Stephen and David Wiseman, the group combined Ayrshire's traditional storytelling culture with a punk and improvised acoustic instrumentation. Their sound was characterized by an experimental approach, utilizing metal dustbins for percussion and scratching records on archaic gramophones. The band gained recognition in 1986 after an impromptu street audition outside London's Devonshire Arms led to a tour of France supporting The Pogues. Their debut album, A Tasty Heidfuâ, was released that year and featured a guest vocal by Andrew Ranken. Although the ensemble achieved little commercial success, they appeared on the television program The Tube and hosted the Lugton Loonie Show for BBC Radio Scotland. The groupâs discography includes Desperation o' a Dyin' Culture (1990), A Keech in a Poke (1994), and Grandpa Craw (1995). Nyah Fearties disbanded in 1995, with the Wiseman brothers later reuniting in the project Junkman's Choir.
