Biography

Norman Shetler was an American-born classical pianist, puppeteer, and professor who was born in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1931. He achieved early professional recognition in 1959 after winning a second prize at the ARD International Music Competition and is famous for his specialization in accompanying vocal soloists and for his international touring production Musical Puppet Cabaret. Shetler moved to Vienna, Austria, in 1955 to study piano and graduated from his studies in 1959. Throughout a career that included over 70 recordings, he collaborated with musicians such as Peter Schreier, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and Nathan Milstein. His discography includes the recordings Schumann: Dichterliebe; Liederkreis; Op 24 & 39 (2006) and Franz Schubert: Winterreise D 911 (2011). Shetler taught piano and lieder accompaniment at the Würzburg School of Music and Drama between 1983 and 1991 and served as a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna starting in 1992. He died in 2024.
