Nirmala Rajasekar, born in Chennai, India, is a Carnatic Saraswati veena player, composer, vocalist, and educator. She began her training at age six under Sri Deva Kottai Narayana Iyengar and Smt. Kamala Aswathama. Rajasekar's career as a soloist started at 13, and she later studied with Smt. Kalpakam Swaminathan for nearly 30 years. Her debut album Song of the Veena was released in 2007 by Innova Recordings, followed by Into the Raga in 2010. Rajasekar has also performed at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and the United Nations, and collaborated with artists such as Pt. Ronu Majumdar and Gao Hong. She was an A-Grade artist of All-India Radio and a performing artist for the Indian Council for Cultural Relations since 1989. Rajasekar's awards include the Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu, and the McKnight Fellowship in 2010.
