Biography
Helen Porter Mitchell, known professionally as Nellie Melba, was born on May 19, 1861, in Richmond, Victoria, Australia. She studied singing with Mary Ellen Christian and Pietro Cecchi in Melbourne and made her professional debut in concerts in 1884. Melba's breakthrough came when she studied under Mathilde Marchesi in Paris. She made her operatic debut as Gilda in Rigoletto at La Monnaie on October 12, 1887. She adopted the stage name "Melba," derived from Melbourne. Her career included notable performances at Covent Garden and the Opéra in Paris. During World War I, she raised funds for war charities. Melba passed away on February 23, 1931. Posthumously, she was featured on the Australian $100 note.
