Biography
Negativland, an American experimental music group, originated in Concord, California, in 1979. The core members included Mark Hosler and Richard Lyons, who were high school students at the time. Negativland released their debut album Points in 1980, marking the beginning of a prolific career characterized by sound collage and experimental rock. Their breakthrough came with the release of Escape from Noise in 1987, which featured the controversial song "Christianity Is Stupid". The band gained wider attention but faced legal issues when Island Records sued them over their parody single "U2" in 1991. Despite these challenges, Negativland continued to release notable albums such as Helter Stupid and Dispepsi. They also coined the term "culture jamming" in 1984, contributing significantly to the experimental music scene.
