Biography

Nanker Phelge was a collective pseudonym used between 1963 and 1965 for several group compositions by the Rolling Stones. Proposed by Brian Jones to share writing royalties among the entire band, the credit referred to a collaborative composition by Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and manager Andrew Loog Oldham. The ASCAP files for the earliest tracks also credited keyboardist Ian Stewart under the pseudonym. The name itself combined the surname of their Edith Grove flatmate, Jimmy Phelge, with "nanker," a term for a funny grimace pulled by band members. According to Oldham, the credit was primarily used for songs that originated from 1950s blues standards they heard at Chess Studios in Chicago, and it also allowed Oldham to receive writing royalties. The pseudonym appeared on songs such as “Stoned” (1963), “Little by Little” (1964), and “Play with Fire” (1965), and on early releases including the EP Five by Five (1964). The pseudonym was discontinued in 1965 as Oldham encouraged the songwriting dominance of the Jagger-Richards partnership. The name resurfaced in the late 1960s on the original vinyl pressings of Beggars Banquet and Let It Bleed, where the manufacture of the albums was credited to Nanker Phelge as an ABKCO company.
