Moonspell are a Portuguese gothic metal band formed in Brandoa, Amadora, in 1989 under the name Morbid God before adopting their current name in 1992. The current lineup features Fernando Ribeiro on vocals, Pedro Paixão on keyboards and guitar, Ricardo Amorim on guitar, Aires Pereira on bass, and Hugo Ribeiro on drums. After the demo Anno Satanæ (1993) and the EP Under the Moonspell (1994), they signed with Century Media and released Wolfheart (1995), which introduced their mix of black metal, gothic atmosphere, Portuguese cultural references, and dark romantic imagery. Irreligious (1996) brought some of their defining songs, including âOpiumâ and âFull Moon Madness,â while Sin/Pecado (1998) pushed the band toward a more gothic rock and electronic sound. Moonspell continued experimenting on The Butterfly Effect (1999), Darkness and Hope (2001), and The Antidote (2003), then reached a new commercial milestone with Memorial (2006), which topped the Portuguese album chart and became the first gold-certified metal album in Portugal. After the early-material re-recording Under Satanæ (2007), they released Night Eternal (2008), featuring Anneke van Giersbergen on âScorpion Flower,â and the paired Alpha Noir/Omega White (2012). Their later work included the gothic-heavy Extinct (2015), the Portuguese-language earthquake concept album 1755 (2017), and Hermitage (2021), their first album with Hugo Ribeiro after longtime drummer Miguel Gasparâs departure. Moonspell followed with From Down Below - Live 80 Meters Deep (2022), recorded in Portugalâs Mira de Aire caves, and released their thirteenth studio album, Far From God (2026), through Napalm Records, previewed by âFar From Godâ and âApophthegmata.â
