Biography

Modern Romance, a British pop band from England, was formed in 1980 by Geoffrey Deane and David Jaymes, who had previously been part of Leyton Buzzards. Their early singles "Modern Romance" (1980) and "Tonight" (1981) were unsuccessful, leading to a shift towards a Latin-American dance style. This change resulted in the hit single "Everybody Salsa," which reached number 20 in the UK in summer 1981. The band's lineup expanded with John Du Prez on trumpet and Andy Kyriacou on drums. Modern Romance signed to WEA and released their debut album, Adventures In Clubland in 1981. Despite its lackluster performance, they achieved notable success with singles like the UK Top 10 entry "Ay Ay Ay Ay Moosey" and "Best Years of Our Lives" (1982). The band's commercial peak continued in 1983 with hits such as "High Life," "Don't Stop That Crazy Rhythm," and the ballad "Walking in the Rain." That year, they released Party Tonight, their most successful album, which was certified gold. Internal conflicts and a change in record labels led to a decline in popularity, and the band disbanded in 1985 after releasing Burn It! and the single "Tarzan Boy." Post-breakup, Deane pursued solo projects and television work, while Jaymes moved into music management. In 1999, Kyriacou reformed Modern Romance with a new lineup, continuing to perform their hits and release albums like Back On Track and Moves 2 Fast in 2002.
