Biography

The Minnesota Orchestra, originally known as the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, was founded in 1903 by Emil Oberhoffer in Minneapolis. The orchestra gave its inaugural performance on November 5, 1903, and began children's concerts in 1911. In the early 1920s, it was among the first orchestras to be recorded and broadcast on radio. The orchestra changed its name to the Minnesota Orchestra in 1968 and has since performed primarily at Minneapolis's Orchestra Hall. Notable music directors include Osmo Vänskä, who served from 2003 to 2022. Thomas Søndergård was announced as its next music director, effective with the 2023–2024 season.
