The Mingus Big Band, a 14-piece ensemble based in New York City, was formed in 1991 to specialize in the compositions of Charles Mingus. Managed by his widow, Sue Mingus, the band performed regularly at DROM NYC and toured extensively. Their debut album, Gunslinging Birds, was released in 1995. The band received seven Grammy Award nominations and won a Grammy in 2011 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album for Mingus Big Band Live at Jazz Standard. Notable releases include Live In Time (1996), Que Viva Mingus! (1997), and Blues & Politics (1999). The band continues to perform and record, with recent albums such as The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions (2022) and The Charles Mingus Centennial Sessions, Vol. 2 (2024).
