Biography
Milton Mapes was a musical group formed in Austin, Texas in 1999. Named after Greg Vanderpool's grandfather, the band initially consisted of Vanderpool and Roberto Sánchez. They released their debut album The State Line in 2001, which gained regional acclaim. The group later expanded to include Britton Beisenherz, Cliff Brown Jr., Chris Dye, and Jim Fredley. Their second album, Westernaire, was released in 2003 under Aspyr Media, featuring guitar-oriented songs that explored themes of love and alcohol. Milton Mapes toured extensively across the United States, sharing bills with notable acts such as Magnolia Electric Co., Cowboy Junkies, Willie Nelson, and The Handsome Family. Their third album, The Blacklight Trap, was released in March 2005 on the Undertow label. The band disbanded in 2006 and reformed as Monahans. In 2010, Robert Plant covered their song "The Only Sound that Matters" from Westernaire (2003).
