Biography
Michel Debost, born on January 20, 1934 in Paris, France, was a classical flutist. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Jan Merry, Gaston Crunelle, and Marcel Moyse, earning degrees in science and flute by 1954. From 1960 to 1990, Michel Debost served as the principal flutist with the Orchestre de Paris. He began annual tours of the United States in 1963. In 1982, he succeeded Jean-Pierre Rampal as a flute professor at the Conservatoire de Paris, holding this position until 1990 when he moved to the United States and started teaching at Oberlin College Conservatory in Ohio. Michel Debost's discography includes recordings such as Vivaldi: Concertos, Op.10 pour Flute et Orchestre (1972), Telemann: Six Sonatas for Two Flutes Op. 2 (1975) and the Panorama series. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award for significant contributions to the flute world in 2001. Michel Debost died on May 2, 2026 at the age of 92.
