Biography
The Melos Ensemble is a renowned London-based chamber group founded in 1950 to perform works for mixed wind and string instrumentation. Early members included clarinetist Gervase de Peyer and flautist Richard Adeney. A defining milestone occurred in 1962 when the ensemble performed the premiere of Benjamin Brittenâs "War Requiem," a work composed specifically for their unique configuration. Following their 1966 American debut, they established a prolific recording legacy of over 50 titles. Notable releases include Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms (1998) and Franz Reizenstein: Piano Quintet; Sonata for Violin and Piano (2005). Their definitive recording of Brittenâs "War Requiem" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998, cementing the ensembleâs status as a cornerstone of 20th-century British chamber music.
