Biography
MC Jin, born Jin Au-Yeung in Miami, Florida on June 4, 1982 to Chinese parents, began his music career in earnest when he followed his parents to New York City in 2001. A gifted freestyle rapper, Jin competed on Freestyle Friday on BETâs 106 & Park, and was so successful he signed with hip-hop label Ruff Ryders. His first single, âLearn Chineseâ, co-written by and featuring Wyclef Jean, dropped in late 2003 and was included on his debut album, 2004âs The Rest Is History. Jin earned rave reviews for his flow, earning him comparisons with another acknowledged master of rap battles, Eminem. In May of 2005 he released the single âI Quitâ, and started appearing on other artistsâ tracks credited as The Emcee, culminating in the release of his second album, The Emceeâs Properganda, which included the ambitious single âTop 5 (Dead or Alive)â, an attempt to tell the history of hip-hop. He left Ruff Ruder in 2006, and independently released new material including 2007âs ABC, his first album recording entirely in Cantonese, and it went to number 1 in Hong Kong. He relocated there, and continued to produce new work, often addressing his newly developed Christian faith. He moved back to his home country and issued XIV:LIX in 2014. After a successful stint on a Chinese rap show in 2017 he became a coach on the Chinese singing competition program Idol Producer.
