Mbongeni Ngema, born on May 10, 1955, in Verulam, Natal, South Africa, was a playwright, director, and musician known for his soulful compositions. He began playing guitar in local bands after dropping out of high school. Ngema's breakthrough came with the co-writing of the play Woza Albert! (1981) and the musical Sarafina! (1987), which won multiple awards, including 11 NAACP Image Awards, and was nominated for five Tony Awards. He also worked as a vocal arranger for Disneyâs The Lion King (1994). Ngema's notable works include Asinamali, Township Fever, and Mama. His musicals often addressed social issues such as apartheid and the AIDS epidemic in South Africa. Ngema died on December 27, 2023, following a head-on car collision.
