Biography
Maurice Abravanel, born Maurice de Abravanel on January 6, 1903 in Salonika, Rumelia Province, Ottoman Empire, was an American conductor. He moved to Lausanne, Switzerland in 1909 and studied harmony and counterpoint under Kurt Weill in Berlin. Abravanel directed at the Paris Opera in 1933 and collaborated with choreographer George Balanchine before moving to Australia in 1934. Bruno Walter and Wilhelm Furtwängler then recommended him to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he became the youngest conductor ever recruited at age 33. Abravanel settled in Salt Lake City, leading the Utah Symphony from 1947 until 1979. He recorded over one hundred albums with this orchestra, including a complete cycle of Gustav Mahler's symphonies. Abravanel passed away on September 22, 1993 in Salt Lake City.
