Biography

Mashrou' Leila is a Lebanese rock band from Beirut that formed in 2008. The ensemble emerged from a music workshop at the American University of Beirut and originally consisted of seven members, including vocalist Hamed Sinno and violinist Haig Papazian. They achieved a breakthrough at the Fête de la musique festival in 2008 and won the jury and public awards for the single “Raksit Leila” (2009). Their debut eponymous studio album, Mashrou' Leila, was released (2009). The group is known for addressing controversial social and political themes including sexuality and corruption. Their discography includes the studio albums El Hal Romancy (2011), Raasük (2013), Ibn El Leil (2015), and The Beirut School (2019). Their musical style is characterized by the use of the megaphone and the violin.
