Biography

Martin Baker is an English organist, composer, and conductor born on July 26, 1967, in Manchester. He studied at Chetham's School of Music and Downing College, Cambridge. Baker served as Assistant Organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1990 and later at Westminster Abbey. From 2000 to 2019, he was Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral. He won the improvisations competition at the St Albans International Organ Festival in 1997. Baker founded the Conference of Catholic Directors of Music in 2009 and served as President of the Royal College of Organists from 2017 to 2019. His discography included the studio recordings Brahms: Missa canonica (2006) and Palestrina: Missa Dum complerentur (2003). His compositions featured the musical pieces “Christus vincit” and “Ecce ego Ioannes” (2025). Baker was elected an Honorary Fellow of Downing College in 2015. He performed regular organ concerts across Europe and the United States.
