Biography

Marilyn Manson is an American rock band formed in 1989 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, by singer Brian Hugh Warner and guitarist Scott Putesky, who adopted the stage names Marilyn Manson and Daisy Berkowitz, respectively. Originally named Marilyn Manson & the Spooky Kids, the band built a reputation on the local scene with a blend of industrial rock, metal, and glam, combined with a particularly striking theatrical aesthetic. After catching the attention of Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson signed with his label, Nothing Records, and released his debut album, Portrait of an American Family, in 1994. The EP Smells Like Children followed in 1995, and his cover of “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” helped significantly expand his audience. In 1996, Antichrist Superstar reached number three on the Billboard 200 and established the band’s international presence, particularly thanks to “The Beautiful People.” With Mechanical Animals in 1998, Marilyn Manson adopted an aesthetic more inspired by glam rock and achieved his first No. 1 album in the United States, driven in particular by “The Dope Show.” Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death) was released in 2000, before the cover of “Tainted Love”—recorded for the soundtrack of Not Another Teen Movie—became a major international hit. In 2003, The Golden Age of Grotesque, featuring “mOBSCENE” and “This Is the New Shit,” became the band’s second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. Following the 2004 compilation Lest We Forget: The Best Of, Marilyn Manson released Eat Me, Drink Me (2007), The High End of Low (2009), and Born Villain (2012). A collaboration with composer and multi-instrumentalist Tyler Bates then led to The Pale Emperor (2015) and Heaven Upside Down (2017), while Shooter Jennings contributed to the creation of We Are Chaos in 2020. Marilyn Manson returned to the stage in 2024 and released One Assassination Under God – Chapter 1 on November 22 via Nuclear Blast. Preceded by “As Sick as the Secrets Within,” “Raise the Red Flag,” and “Sacrilegious,” the album reached No. 32 on the Billboard 200 and No. 4 in Germany. In 2025, the band continued the One Assassination Under God Tour and released a cover of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.” On August 14, 2026, One Assassination Under God – Chapter 2 was released, once again produced with Tyler Bates and preceded by the singles “Exit Wound” and “Front Toward Enemy.” Marilyn Manson continues his live performances in parallel, notably with a North American headlining tour shared with Rob Zombie beginning in August 2026.
