Biography

Maleem Mahmoud Ghania was a Moroccan Gnawa musician born in Morocco in 1951. Ghania was the son of the master of Gnawa music, MaÃ¢llem Boubker Gania. They began a professional recording career in the 1970s with the label Fikriphone. Ghania achieved recognition for the album The Trance of Seven Colors (1994), which was co-produced by Bill Laswell and featured the musician Pharoah Sanders. They collaborated with Western musicians including Peter BrÃ¶tzmann and Hamid Drake on the recording The Wels Concert (1997). Their discography includes the album Shaman of the Sahara (2001), recorded with Tata Guinness. Subsequent releases include the albums Colours of the Night (2017) and Aicha (2020). Ghania died in 2015.
