Biography

Lynn Ahrens, born October 1, 1948 in New York City, is an American writer and lyricist for the musical theatre, television and film. She began her career as a copywriter for McCaffrey and McCall before transitioning into songwriting. Her breakthrough came when she wrote "The Preamble" for ABC-TV's Schoolhouse Rock!. Ahrens met Stephen Flaherty at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in 1982, marking the start of their long-standing collaboration. Their first produced musical was Lucky Stiff, which premiered Off-Broadway in 1988. Notable works include Once on This Island (1990), Ragtime (1998), and Anastasia. She also wrote the teleplay for her 1994 musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol with music by Alan Menken.
