Biography
Luis Enrique MejÃa Godoy, born February 19, 1945, in Somoto, Nicaragua, is a musician, composer, and songwriter. His father was a musician, and his brother Carlos MejÃa Godoy also became renowned in music. MejÃa Godoy formed his first group during secondary school in León and moved to Costa Rica in 1965 to begin studying medicine, but he abandoned his studies in 1969 to pursue music full-time. He started his solo career with the release of Hilachas de sol (1970). MejÃa Godoy's work is marked by its social content, and notable works include the song "Congolà Shangó" (1973) and the album La revolución (1980). During Nicaraguaâs Sandinista government from 1979 to 1990, he played a significant role in the Ministry of Culture and founded the Empresa Nicaragüense de Grabaciones Culturales (ENIGRAC). He produced over 100 discs during his time at the recording company. MejÃa Godoy received numerous awards, including the Orden de la Independencia Cultural Rubén DarÃo and the "Güegüense de Oro."
