Luis de Milán, also known as LluÃs del Milà , was a Spanish Renaissance composer and vihuelist born around 1500 in Valencia. He achieved professional recognition as the first composer to publish music for the vihuela de mano, an instrument used primarily in the Iberian Peninsula and Italian states during the 15th and 16th centuries. Employed by the Valencian court of Germaine de Foix until approximately 1538, Milán published the parlor game El juego de mandar (1535) before issuing his most significant work, El maestro (1536). Dedicated to King John III of Portugal, this collection was the first printed work of vihuela music and introduced written tempo instructions and Spanish tablature. His compositions, including fantasÃas, pavanas, and villancicos, required considerable virtuosity and utilized innovative chromaticism. His final publication, El cortesano (1561), provides a detailed account of court life and musical ideas of the period. Milán died around 1561.
