Louis Stewart, born on January 5, 1944, in Waterford, Ireland, was an Irish jazz guitarist. He began playing guitar at age thirteen and started his career performing in Dublin showbands. In 1968, he won the award for most outstanding soloist at the Montreux Jazz Festival, leading to collaborations with Benny Goodman and a move to London where he recorded his subsequent albums. Throughout the mid-1970s, Stewart worked extensively with George Shearing, touring internationally and recording several albums. He received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College in 1998 and was elected to Aosdána in 2009. Louis Stewart passed away on August 20, 2016, in Harold's Cross, Dublin.
