Biography

Lothar Koch was a German oboist born in Germany in 1935. Koch studied at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and began a professional career as the principal oboist of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Fribourg-en-Brisgau. In 1957, they were appointed principal oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic under the conductor Herbert von Karajan. Koch co-founded the ensemble Philharmonischen Solisten Berlin in 1961 and began teaching at the Stern Conservatory that same year. In 1972, they joined the faculty of the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic. Koch established the Bläserensemble der Berliner Philharmoniker in 1978, performing regularly at the Salzburg Festival. Their recordings include oboe concertos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Richard Strauss, and Hans-Jürgen von Bose. They served as a professor at the Mozarteum University Salzburg starting in 1990. Koch died in 2003.
