Elizabeth "Liz" Lands, born February 11, 1939, in Sea Island, Georgia, was an American soul singer. She released a jazz and blues album titled Untamed! on Mercury Records in 1959. Berry Gordy discovered her at a benefit concert for Martin Luther King Jr., leading to her signing with Motown's Divinity Records. Her first single, "May What He Lived for Live", was produced by Gordy in 1963 as a tribute to President John F. Kennedy. In March 1964, she released the single "Midnight Johnny" featuring backing vocals from The Temptations. After Martin Luther King Jr. died in 1968, Motown released its version of "We Shall Overcome", paired with Kingâs speech "I Have a Dream". She passed away on January 11, 2013, in Atlanta.
