Biography

Les Claypool is one of the great bassists of US alternative rock. His convoluted style owes as much to Tony Levin and Chris Squire as to Bootsy Collins, whose exuberance he shares. Les Claypool formed Primus in 1984, which went on to become one of the flagships of alternative rock with albums such as Sailing the Seas of Cheese (1991) and Pork Soda (1993). Les Claypool began his solo career in 1996 with Highball with the Devil. In 2000, he formed Oysterhead with Trey Anastasio and Stewart Copeland for a single album. His albums Live Frogs: Set 1 and Live Frogs: Set 2 in 2001 under the name Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade remain the most interesting of his solo career. Purple Onion (2002), Of Whales and Woe (2006), Of Fungi and Foe (2009) are both highly personal and uneven.
