Biography

Leo Soileau was an American musician and one of the most prolific Cajun recording artists of the 1930s and 1940s. Born in Ville Platte, Louisiana, he began playing music at age 12. In 1928, Soileau made his recording debut with Mayeus Lafleur for Victor Records, producing songs including “Mama, Where You At?” Soileau also collaborated with accordionists Moise Robin and Oscar “Slim” Doucet, as well as his cousin Alius Soileau, recording for Victor and Vocalion. In the mid-1930s, he formed The Three Aces, which later became The Four Aces, recording for Bluebird and Decca Records with influences from Western swing, blues, ragtime, and Texas fiddle music. Soileau continued performing throughout Louisiana and Texas with groups such as The Rhythm Boys until his retirement in 1953. He died in Ville Platte in 1980.
