Biography

Leonard Aloysius Hibbert, known as Lennie Hibbert, was a Jamaican vibraphonist and bandleader who was born on November 12, 1928 in Mavis Bank. He began his musical journey at Alpha School as a drummer and later taught himself to play the vibraphone while in the Military Band. Hibbert returned to Alpha School as bandmaster in 1955. In the 1960s, he worked with jazz groups and the reggae group Sound Dimension band, recording riddims for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd. His debut solo album, Creation, was released in 1969 on Studio One, featuring instrumentals showcasing his vibraphone skills. A second album, More Creation, followed in 1971. Hibbert collaborated with Harry Mudie, releasing the single "Margaret's Dream" in 1974. He was awarded the Order of Distinction in 1976 for his contributions to music and youth work. Hibbert passed away on September 8, 1984.
