Lemuel Davis Winchester, who was born on March 19, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was an American jazz vibraphonist and composer. After playing tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, and piano, he switched to the vibraphone. He worked as a police officer in Wilmington, Delaware. His career grew after he was featured at the Newport Jazz Festival in June 1958. On October 8, 1958, he recorded his debut album, Lem Winchester and The Ramsey Lewis Trio Perform A Tribute To Clifford Brown (1958), which was issued by Argo Records and featured covers of the songs "Jordu" and "Joy Spring". On September 25, 1959, he recorded the album Winchester Special (1959) for New Jazz Records. He followed this with the albums Lem Beat (1960) and Another Opus (1960). His work as a sideman included performing on Oliver Nelson's album Taking Care of Business (1960), Shirley Scott's album Soul Sister (1960), and accompanying Etta Jones on the album Something Nice (1960). He recorded his final album, With Feeling (1960), for the sub-label Moodsville on October 7, 1960. He left the police service in 1960 to focus on music, but died on January 13, 1961, in Indianapolis, Indiana, during an accidental shooting while demonstrating a revolver trick.
