Herbert Kegel, born on July 29, 1920 in GroÃzschachwitz, Germany, was a conductor. He studied at the Academy for Music and Theater Dresden and began his career directing at the Pirna Operetta Theatre and Rostock City Theatre. In 1949, Kegel became the artistic director of the Leipzig Radio Choir, serving until 1978. He also led the Rundfunk-Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1958 to 1978 and later became its honorary conductor. Notable recordings include Gounod: Margarethe (1971) and Beethoven: Missa Solemnis (1975). From 1977 to 1985, he was the chief conductor of the Dresden Philharmonic. Kegel's discography earned him multiple awards, notably the German Record Critics' Prize in 1986 for his digital recordings of Beethovenâs symphonies. He passed away on November 20, 1990, in Dresden.
