Biography

Laurie Alexis Lewis is an American bluegrass singer, fiddler, and songwriter who was born in 1950. She began her musical training on the piano and violin and later transitioned to the guitar and fiddle after attending the Berkeley Folk Festival. In the early 1970s, she played with the band The Phantoms of the Opry and co-founded the all-female group Good Ol' Persons. She founded the Grant Street String Band in 1979 and released the album Grant Street String Band (1983). Her solo studio recordings include the albums Restless Rambling Heart (1986) and Love Chooses You (1989). Lewis received two International Bluegrass Music Awards for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1992 and 1994. In 1997, she contributed to the album True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe (1996), which won a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. Her later recordings include the albums The Hazel and Alice Sessions (2016) and Trees (2024).
