Lamya was a Kenyan-born English singer and songwriter born as Lamya Hafidh Sultan Al-Mugheiry on 30 October 1963 in Mombasa. She achieved professional recognition for a musical career that began in 1989 after she received classical vocal training and relocated to New York City at age 16. Her recording career began with the song âBreak 4 Loveâ (1989), which reached number 77 in the United Kingdom. Lamya achieved professional recognition for performing as a lead vocalist for the ensemble Soul II Soul on the studio recording Vol. II: 1990 â A New Decade (1990) and the live recording A New Decade: Live from Brixton Academy (1990). She achieved professional recognition for performing as a backing vocalist for the ensemble Duran Duran on the Wedding Album tour between 1993 and 1995. Her discography included collaborating with the musicians David Bowie, Prince, and James Brown. Lamya achieved professional recognition for the debut studio recording Learning from Falling (2002), which reached number 16 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. She achieved professional recognition for the song âEmpires (Bring Me Men)â (2002), which reached Number 1 on the US Dance chart. Al-Mugheiry died on 8 January 2009 in Oman.
