Biography

Indigenous is an American blues rock ensemble formed in Marty, South Dakota. The original lineup consisted of siblings Mato Nanji, Pte Nanji, and Wanbdi Nanji, along with their cousin Horse. The group released the studio recording Awake in 1995 and reached prominence with the 1998 album Things We Do. The ensemble received three Native American Music Awards in 1999, including Album of the Year and Group of the Year. The recording “Now That You're Gone” reached number 22 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. Subsequent recordings included Live at Pachyderm Studios (1999), Circle (2000), and Indigenous (2003). Following a split in 2006, Mato Nanji performed under the ensemble name with various musicians. He released the studio recording Broken Lands in 2008 and the album Vanishing Americans in 2012, which received a Native American Music Award in 2014.
