Kimi Djabaté, born on January 20, 1975 in Tabato, Guinea-Bissau, is a Bissau-Guinean musician. He began playing the balafon at age three and later studied the kora in neighboring Sonako. Djabaté's musical journey started with performing at local ceremonies to support his family. His early influences included traditional Mandingo music, gumbé, afrobeat, morna, jazz, and blues. After touring Europe with Guinea-Bissauâs national ensemble, Djabaté settled in Lisbon, Portugal. He released his debut solo album Teriké in 2005. In 2009, he signed with Cumbancha for the release of Karam, an album addressing social and political themes. Djabaté has collaborated with artists such as Mory Kanté and Waldemar Bastos. His subsequent albums include Kanamalu (2016) and Dindin (2023).
