Kevin Rowland, born on August 17, 1953, in Wednesfield, Staffordshire, England, is a British singer and musician best known as the frontman for the pop band Dexys Midnight Runners. Rowland's first musical venture was with the short-lived band Lucy & the Lovers. He then formed the punk rock act The Killjoys, releasing the single "Johnny Won't Get To Heaven" in 1977. Alienated by the punk scene, Rowland and guitarist Kevin Archer formed Dexys Midnight Runners, a soul-influenced group known for hits like "Geno" and "Come On Eileen", both of which reached Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in 1982. The band's success continued with albums such as Too-Rye-Ay (1982) and Don't Stand Me Down (1985). However, by the end of the 1980s, Rowland sought to explore different songwriting directions, leading to a shift in musical style that ultimately resulted in the band's disbandment. Following Dexys Midnight Runners' dissolution, Rowland released his solo album The Wanderer (1987), which was commercially unsuccessful. In 2003, he reformed Dexys Midnight Runners with bassist Pete Williams and embarked on a successful comeback tour. The band continued to release albums, including One Day I'm Going to Soar (2012) and Let the Record Show: Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul (2016).
