Born Kelsey Elizabeth McJunkins in Charlotte, North Carolina, on May 12, 1991, Kelsey Lu is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who performs pop, R&B, and experimental soul. After growing up in isolation within a family of Jehovahâs Witnesses, she decided to take control of her destiny at age 18 and put her passion and talent for musicâwhich she had been cultivating since the age of 6âto good use. She enrolled in a school to hone her skills on her favorite instrument, the cello, while also studying vocals and drawing inspiration from a variety of experiences, such as her collaboration with the Southern rap group Nappy Roots and the multidisciplinary art collective HOWDOYOUSAYYAMINAFRICAN. Based in Brooklyn, she decided in 2016 to produce her first EP, recording six songs performed with vocals and cello. Titled Church âsince it was recorded live in a church in Greenpointâit was released in 2016 on the True Panther label. Three years later, her debut album, Blood, was released on the Columbia label. In 2024, Kelsey Lu composed the music for two film soundtracks, Daughters and Earth Mama. In 2026, she released her second album, So Help Me God, on Dirty Hit Limited.
