Kayak, a Dutch rock band, was formed in Hilversum in 1968 by keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel and drummer Pim Koopman. The group's lineup solidified in 1972 with the addition of Johan Slager on guitar, Cees van Leeuwen on bass, and Max Werner as vocalist. Kayak released their debut album See See the Sun in 1973 under Harvest Records, marking a significant breakthrough for the band. The album showcased their progressive rock style, blending melodic and symphonic elements reminiscent of early Genesis and Yes. Throughout the 1970s, Kayak continued to release albums such as Kayak, Royal Bed Bouncer, and The Last Encore. Their song "Ruthless Queen" from the album Phantom of the Night reached sixth position in the Dutch charts in March 1979. The band faced several lineup changes, with Ton Scherpenzeel being the only constant member. In 1982, Kayak disbanded after releasing nine albums. They reunited in 1999 following a TV appearance and have since released numerous albums, including Close to the Fire, Nostradamus - The Fate of Man, and Journey Through Time. Pim Koopman, who had left the band in 1976 due to health issues, rejoined in 1999 but passed away on November 23, 2009.
